Turin (Torino) is a city in constant evolution: from Augusta Taurinorum (after 27 a.C.) to the capital of the Savoy Dukedom (1563) until becoming Italy’s first capital (1861), the queen of the automobile industry (1899) and the star of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Today it is being presented with an image that makes it even more appealing. Turin is a city that is just waiting to be discovered in all of its many aspects: filled with historic evidence, acclaimed museums, works of contemporary art en plein air, cultural events, with its characteristic porticos, renowned historical meeting places, its extensive parks and magic places.
Top sights to discover in Turin
Mole Antonelliana
Begun by Alessandro Antonelli in 1863 as a synagogue, with a 168-meter-tall spire added in 1878 to 1880, Mole Antonelliana is the most recognizable landmark on Turin's skyline. The tower offers spectacular 360-degree views across the city to the surrounding hills and the Savoy Alps.
Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum)
The Palazzo dell'Accademia delle Scienze houses the Egyptian Museum, whose collections began in 1824 when King Carlo Felice acquired 5,268 artifacts excavated in Egypt. Nowadays the Egyptian Museum is Turin's most visited attraction.
Juventus Stadium
A must-see for followers of Turin's Juventus, the stadium is officially called the Allianz Stadium, but in Turin it's simply known as The Stadium. You can visit to see the museum and take a guided tour through the facilities, visiting the locker rooms, press box, and the pitch itself.
Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile
The National Automobile Museum provides a comprehensive survey of the development of the motor car, with special attention to the Turin auto manufacturers, but by no means limited to them. The collection of antique and classic cars is outstanding, and multimedia exhibits tell their stories and put automobiles in a social and cultural context.
Palazzo Reale
The hub of the Court and of political power, the Royal Palace and the surrounding buildings formed the centre of command and the main place for representing all the majesty of the House of Savoy.
Palazzo Carignano
The palace, which was the birthplace of King Victor Emmanuel II (1820) and once the meeting place of the Sardinian chamber of deputies and of the first Italian parliament, now houses the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento
Palazzo Madama
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the first Senate in the Kingdom of Italy, Palazzo Madama embodies the city's history: from a Roman gate it became a fortress during the Middle Ages and subsequently a castle for the Acaja princes.
Piazza San Carlo
The beautiful arcaded square has become a regular stage for various historical and social events, including election rallies, concerts, sports events like the 2006 Winter Olympics or Juventus matches.
Royal Palace of Venaria
The incredible Royal Palace of Venaria now hosts major events, exhibitions and concerts in its magnificent interiors and spectacular gardens.
Turin Cathedral
Since 1578, the Duomo – the only example of Renaissance art in the city – has held the Holy Shroud, the Cloth claimed to have wrapped the body of Christ.

Shopping
The long colonnaded route created in the past for the perambulations of the Savoy household in the town centre has now become an absolute paradise for shoppers. The area traditionally devoted to shopping is between Via Roma and the pedestrian zones of Via Carlo Alberto and Via Lagrange where the shop windows of all the big names in fashion and jewellery glitteringly shine. Via Garibaldi is younger and trendier, Via Po is more “intellectual” with the bookshops and stores selling new and used records.
Dining
Piazza Vittorio Veneto, on the River Po, Borgo Dora and the Roman Quarter - the city's real centre - are home to many trendy spots: here art, food and design make the atmosphere even more sparkling, here you can listen to classical music, pop and jazz all strictly live, you can chat, watch artistic performances, dance until dawn. Also San Salvario has an irresistible allure, the multiethnic district (between Porta Nuova station and Valentino Park), the focus of a major urban renewal project.
Culture
If your idea of an evening is more… classic, and you experience a thrill every time the curtain rises, then be enchanted by opera, concerts, dance, great drama and the avant-garde that tread the boards of the many theatres in the city: discover the Regio Theatre, Auditorium del Lingotto, Auditorium RAI, and Carignano Theatre.
